Boeing union members decide to strike
Nigeria News.Net Friday 5th September, 2008
Despite 48-hour negotiations between Boeing and the Machinists Union, a strike has now been set to begin on Saturday.
Boeing has said it will remain open for further discussions but both sides were too far apart to reach agreement.
The Machinists have asked for wage increases for 25,000 aircraft assembly workers in the Puget Sound area and about 2,000 more in Kansas and Oregon.
Boeing's three-year offer included bonuses totaling at least $5,000 and pay raises averaging 11 percent, pension increases and a 3 percent cost-of-living adjustment.
The average Boeing machinist earns $27 an hour, or about $56,000 a year, before overtime and incentives.
Boeing has said it will not try to assemble planes during the strike.
