PUL-E-KHUMRI, Afghanistan -- Eight people including six militants and two security personnel were killed as a clash broke out in Afghanistan's northern Baghlan province on Monday, provincial police spokesman Ahmad Jawed Basharat said.
The clash erupted after a group of Taliban militants attacked the security checkpoints in Baghlan-e-Markazi district of the restive province early morning, triggering heavy fighting which lasted for a couple of hours. The militants fled after leaving six bodies behind. (Afghanistan-Taliban-Clash)

MOGADISHU -- The Somali National Army (SNA) has killed a senior Shabab operative and arrested two others in an operation in the Middle Shabelle region, a military officer confirmed on Monday.
Abshir Mohamed Mohamud, SNA commander for Unit 3, told military radio that the army conducted a planned operation on Sunday along the road linking Balad and Jowhar towns in southern Somalia and inflicted casualties on the militants. (Somalia-Shabab)

LAGOS -- At least seven people have been confirmed dead following a tanker explosion in Nigeria's north-central state of Benue, an official said on late Sunday.
The fire was caused by a tanker, which lost control and fell after experiencing brake failure, according to Yakubu Mohammed, head of the state's Federal Road Safety Corps. (Nigeria-Explosion)
