WASHINGTON, D.C.: The nationwide ban that prevents landlords from evicting those who do not pay their rent will expire Saturday.

The Biden administration has said it will not be able to extend the ban after the Supreme Court signaled it could only be extended until the end of July.

In a statement Thursday, the White House called on "Congress to extend the eviction moratorium to protect such vulnerable renters and their families without delay."

The moratorium on evictions began in September 2020 after being ordered by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Officials said that by March 2021 some 6.4 million American households were behind on their rents, according to the Department of Housing and Urban Development.

Additionally, as of July 5, 3.6 million people in the U.S. said they faced eviction in the next two months, according to the U.S. Census Bureau's Household Pulse Survey.
