ABUJA, Nov. 26 (Xinhua) -- At least 10 villagers were killed early Friday when a group of unknown gunmen attacked a community in central Nigeria's Plateau state, the police said.

Uba Ogba, the spokesman for the police in the Plateau state, told reporters in Jos, the capital city of the state, that over 30 houses were razed by the gunmen who attacked the Ta'agbe community of Miango Chiefdom in the Bassa local government area of the state.

The gunmen invaded the community early in the morning and began to shoot at residents while setting fire on buildings, Ogba said.

He said the police had immediately moved to the scene of the incident to chase away the gunmen.

The motive of the attack has not been known by the police, Ogba added.

Armed banditry has been a primary security threat in Nigeria's northern and central regions, leading to deaths and kidnappings in recent months.
