UNITED NATIONS, Jan. 10 (Xinhua) -- United Nations (UN) Secretary-General Antonio Guterres denounced on Monday the "appalling" attacks committed over the weekend in Nigeria's Zamfara state, which resulted in scores of civilian deaths.

The UN chief extended sympathies to the families of the victims and urged Nigerian authorities to take all necessary steps to bring those responsible to justice.

Furthermore, Guterres affirmed the solidarity and support of the UN for Nigeria's fight against terrorism, violent extremism and organized crime.

Mass abductions and other violent crimes have been on the rise in northwest Nigeria since late 2020.
