ABUJA, Jan. 12 (Xinhua) -- Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari on Wednesday commended the Super Eagles, Nigeria's senior national football team, for an impressive start at the ongoing 33rd Africa Cup of Nations(AFCON) in Cameroon.
The Super Eagles defeated a formidable opponent, Egypt 1-0, in their first Group D stage encounter in the Cameroonian city of Garoua on Tuesday.
In a statement, Buhari said he strongly believed that the spectacular outing by the Super Eagles was "a foretaste of what to expect from the dedicated team as they square up against other opponents in the tournament."
The Nigerian leader, who assured the country's national team of his support, called on the Augustine Eguavoen-led squad and the coaching staff to keep their eyes on the ball, remain good ambassadors on and off the field, and give loyal fans and all Nigerians more exciting moments to celebrate.
With the victory on Tuesday, Nigeria had broken an unbeaten record by Egypt, as the north Africans had been unbeaten in their last 16 group matches at the AFCON.
