ABUJA, Jan. 18 (Xinhua) -- At least 16 people were killed following an attack by gunmen in Nigeria's northwestern state of Kebbi at the weekend, the police said on Tuesday.

Nafiu Abubakar, a spokesman for the police in Kebbi, told reporters at a press briefing in Birnin Kebbi, the state's capital city that a police officer, two soldiers and 13 residents were killed in the attack perpetrated by the gunmen at the Dankade village of the Danko Wasagu local government area of the state on Friday.

According to Abubakar, the gunmen, believed to have fled the neighboring Zamfara state, had invaded the community and unleashed terror on civilians and the security personnel.

On hearing of the invasion, he said a security patrol team was mobilized to the village and engaged the gunmen, who also set some houses ablaze, in a gun duel.

An unknown number of gunmen were killed in the duel, Abubakar said, adding the police had launched an investigation into the attack.

Armed banditry has been a primary security threat in Nigeria's northern and central regions, leading to deaths and kidnappings in recent months.
