10 May 2022, 04:55 GMT+10

LAGOS, May 9 (Xinhua) -- Nigerian police said on Monday a Catholic priest was abducted by unidentified gunmen from the church premises in the southern state of Akwa Ibom.

The gunmen on two motorcycles invaded the church in the Mkpat Enin area of the state at about 7:30 p.m. local time on Sunday, and they went directly to the victim's residence before whisking him away, said Odiko Macdon, a spokesperson for the police in Akwa Ibom, while addressing reporters in Uyo, the state capital.

Macdon said "all hands would be on deck" to ensure that police rescue the priest and that perpetrators are brought to book.

Armed attacks are frequently reported in Nigeria, Africa's most populous country, resulting in deaths and abduction of civilians as well as security operatives.
