LAGOS, May 21 (Xinhua) -- Nigerian railway authorities announced on Friday postponement of the resumption of train services between the capital city Abuja and the northern city of Kaduna corridor, which was suspended after an attack on a train along the route in March.

The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) announced earlier this week train service between Abuja and Kaduna would resume on May 23.

A passenger train en route to Kaduna from Abuja was attacked by yet-to-be-identified gunmen in Rijana, a town in Kaduna On March 28, resulting in deaths of at least eight passengers and abduction of over 60 people.

In a statement issued in Abuja on Friday, the NRC said a new date for the resumption of train services would be announced, without giving further details such as the reasons for the postponement.

The statement also said the government "is alive to its responsibility" for the safe rescue of all persons being held hostage by the gunmen.

Nigeria, the most populous African country, has in recent months been troubled by a series of insecurity cases, including kidnapping, banditry and extremist attacks.
