LAGOS, May 22 (Xinhua) -- A Nigerian state governor on Sunday confirmed the death of two officials abducted by unidentified gunmen a week ago in the southern state of Anambra.

The bodies of the two officials, including a member of the state house of assembly, were discovered near a village in the Nnewi South local government area of the state on Saturday, Anambra governor Chukwuma Soludo said in a statement.

The two were abducted on May 15 along a road in the state's Anaocha local government area, according to local media reports.

Soludo condemned the killings and called on local residents to help catch the abductors.

"Anambra will win against the forces of darkness. I urge Anambra people to brace up for the all-out war against the criminals," he said.

Armed attacks are frequently reported in Nigeria, Africa's most populous country, resulting in deaths and abduction of civilians as well as security personnel.
