ABUJA, Nov. 17 (Xinhua) -- At least six gunmen were killed during recent clearance operations by Nigerian troops in the country's northern state of Kaduna, the government said Friday.

The state government said in a statement that the extensive clearance operations were recently carried out in the Birnin Gwari and Giwa local government areas but did not elaborate on the exact date.

The troops had a gunfight with the gunmen, subduing them with superior firepower, the government's statement said, noting that arms and ammunition belonging to the criminals were also captured during the operations.

Governor Uba Sani of Kaduna has urged the troops to "sustain the tempo and focus of operations," the statement added.
