ABUJA, May 8 (Xinhua) -- At least 16 people were killed early Friday after a commuter bus veered off a bridge in north-central Nigeria's Kogi State, local police said.

Lawan Fagge, the Federal Road Safety Corps commander in Kogi, told reporters in Lokoja that six others were injured in the accident at Aku Village along the Okene-Lokoja highway.

Preliminary investigation indicates the speeding bus lost control before plunging off the bridge onto the road below. Fagge attributed the crash to speeding and driver fatigue, describing the incident as avoidable.

Deadly road accidents are frequently reported in Nigeria, often caused by overloading, poor road conditions, and reckless driving.
